This project develops an international, tumor board-style digital pathology platform to improve the timeliness and accuracy of cancer diagnosis across low- and middle-income countries. Pathologists at partner institutions on four continents will share cases through a secure image management system, connecting local diagnosticians with a wider community of expertise for education and clinical decision-making. Drawing on strengths in digital pathology, artificial intelligence, human-centered design and health policy, the team builds workflows that are intuitive and adaptable across diverse settings, while embedding equity, data governance and evaluation into the design. The long-term aim is a sustainable, scalable network that reduces disparities in cancer care by expanding access to high-quality pathology where specialists are scarce.

This project builds the evidence base for screening pregnant and postpartum patients for PMAD in Ghana, where such screening is not yet standard. Led jointly by teams at the University of Michigan and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the study enrolls patients at their first prenatal visit and follows them through six months postpartum, comparing screening tools such as the EPDS and PHQ-9 to gold standard diagnosis across the perinatal timeline. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design pairs surveys with in-depth interviews to understand the cultural and contextual factors that will shape future implementation. The work is designed to identify the ideal tool, timing, and local adaptations needed to bring routine PMAD screening into Ghanaian obstetric care.

This project tests an integrated program that pairs trauma healing with financial literacy for young mothers living in Nairobi's informal settlements, where climate stress, gender-based violence and economic precarity intersect. Working in partnership with Elim Trust, the team uses a participatory action research approach to co-design and adapt a healing circles model, finalize referral pathways for gender-based violence and mental health services, and evaluate changes in mental health, agency, and economic resilience over time. The collaboration spans social work, psychology, and environment and sustainability, and centers community leadership at every phase. Findings will establish preliminary effect sizes and a refined program manual to inform a larger trial and future scale-up.

This project addressed the critical issue of non-vaccination, under-vaccination, and late vaccination in Bangladesh, particularly among marginalized communities such as residents of urban informal settlements, climate internally displaced persons (IDPs), peri-urban/rural residents, and Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs). By collecting and analyzing data in the Teknaf/Cox’s Bazar region and in urban informal settlements in Dhaka, the project identified current vaccination rates, the timeliness of vaccinations, and the factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy and delayed acceptance. The study provided insights into vaccine decision-making behaviors and barriers within these communities, informing strategies to improve vaccination rates. The ultimate goal was to enhance public health programming and policy to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with vaccine-preventable diseases like polio, measles, COVID-19, cholera, and HPV. This project contributed to achieving vaccine equity, particularly in marginalized populations, and provided a foundation for further research and interventions aimed at improving health outcomes in Bangladesh.
