Bilal Butt, PhD
Bilal Butt, PhD, is a Professor of Environment and Sustainability. He serves as Senior Advisor at the Center for Global Health Equity.
His global health work focuses on interactions between people and the environment in African drylands. His interests in global health equity align with the Center's themes of strengthening health systems in rural and remote areas experiencing rapid climatic shifts. He is the Director of the Critical Environmental Geopolitics Research Group at the School for Environment and Sustainability and coordinator for STEM activities at the African Studies Center. Professor Butt received the National Science Foundation’s CAREER Award, the Kwadwo Konadu-Agyemang Distinguished Scholar Award in African Geography from the Association of American Geographers, and the Superior Teaching Award from the University of Michigan. Butt’s research interests include understanding the politics of health and environmental policy, environmental justice, human rights, and environmental violence.
