Social determinants of aging, sensory impairment, and mobility disparities

Shu Xu’s global health focus centers on aging and sensory impairment, with attention to how vision and hearing loss shape mobility, participation, and well-being among older adults. Her work highlights the social and environmental factors influencing functioning in later life, contributing to the understanding of disability-related disparities relevant to global health equity in aging populations. Her interests in global health equity align with the Center’s themes of addressing social and environmental determinants of health. Xu’s research draws on population-based aging studies and interdisciplinary frameworks to examine sensory impairment and mobility in later life, with relevance across diverse sociocultural and geographic contexts. This work generates empirical evidence to inform future research and interventions addressing aging-related inequities worldwide.
