Zul Merali, PhD

Bio-psychosocial determinants of mental health

Zul Merali’s global work focuses on biopsychosocial determinants of mental well being and mental ill health, with a focus on the impact of stressors and trauma on brain chemistry and mental ill health. His institutional focus is on implementation science and on suicidal acts and depression. His interests in global health equity align with the Center's themes of empowering women and communities, strengthening systems for health, and providing technical solutions. In his past role as CEO of the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research, Merali launched the Canadian Depression Research and Intervention Research Network (CDRIN) as its founding Scientific Director. CDRIN has collaborated with the National Network of Depression Centers, led from the University of Michigan.
