Midwifery-led care, maternal health equity, and health systems integration

Nicole Werner’s global health focus centers on advancing equitable maternal and newborn health through the development and implementation of midwifery-led, community-based models of care that integrate with existing health systems. She is particularly interested in strengthening access to respectful, evidence-based reproductive care in underserved settings and building scalable solutions to improve outcomes, reduce unnecessary interventions, and address structural inequities in maternal health. Her interests in global health equity align with the Center’s themes of empowering women and strengthening systems for health. Werner’s research centers on the implementation of science and health systems strengthening, focusing on integrating midwifery-led models into fragmented or under-resourced care systems. She evaluates clinical outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and patient experience to generate evidence that informs policy and supports the scale-up of equitable maternal health models.
