Nelson Sewankambo is a member of the Center’s External Advisory Board. He is Professor Emeritus and former Dean of Makerere Medical School, Uganda and a past Principal Makerere University College of Health Sciences. Nelson Sewankambo’s global work focuses on the advancement of medical education, research capacity development, and linking research to policy and action. He has done epidemiological and interventional HIV/AIDS research and also contributed to building indigenous research capacity to conduct quality research relevant to Uganda, the region, and globally.
Sewankambo founded the Rakai Health Sciences Program, the Infectious Diseases Institute at Makerere University, the Makerere-University Walter Reed Research Institute (MUWRP), and was a founding member and Board Chair of the Makerere Joint AIDS Program in Uganda. He was a member of the research team that for the first time identified and documented the existence of HIV in Uganda in the early 1980s. Sewankambo collaborates
