Gender, cultural and social influences on mental health, trauma recovery, and help seeking
Denise Saint Arnault’s global work focuses on the intersection of gender and culture as influencing help seeking and recovery for gender-based violence survivors. Her interests in global health equity align with the Center’s themes of empowering women and communities and addressing social and environmental determinants of health. Saint Arnault develops and tests her Cultural Determinants of Help Seeking theory in research with women in the US, Japan, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Turkey, and Romania, where she uses mixed methods to discover how distress experiences, culturally based meanings (such as stigma and sense of coherence), social support, and social negativity impact the help seeking journey.
