On Global Health Equity and the 'Savior Complex'

a group of people lift their hands in the air
September 26, 2023

As the global community continues to reflect on the enduring legacy and far-reaching consequences of colonization, the HBO documentary series 'Savior Complex' has brought this dialogue into the spotlight once again. This thought-provoking series delves into the actions and repercussions of Renee Bach, a former missionary who operated a charity for malnourished children in Uganda without any medical qualifications. 'Savior Complex' takes a deep dive into the complex web of race, religion, and power that often underpins foreign aid work carried out in the name of humanitarian and religious ideals.

'Savior Complex' raises critical questions about the ethics and efficacy of humanitarian aid, particularly when it is driven by individuals lacking the necessary qualifications and expertise. The allegations surrounding Renee Bach's actions, including the tragic deaths of 105 children under her charity's care, underscore the urgent need for responsible and evidence-based approaches to global health interventions.

The Center for Global Health Equity stands firmly against the type of humanitarian aid depicted in 'Savior Complex.' We believe in partnering differently, grounded in the principles that have guided our work for years. Our commitment to health equity, accountability, and meaningful collaboration informs our approach to global health initiatives.

How We Approach Impact

  • Moving Beyond Traditional Measures of Success: We recognize that success in global health cannot be solely measured by numbers or statistics. It encompasses the tangible improvements in the lives of individuals and communities.
  • Solution-Driven Initiatives: We prioritize initiatives that have the potential for positive and sustainable change, aiming to address the root causes of health disparities.
  • Valuing Health Equity: Health equity is at the core of our mission. We believe that everyone should have fair and just opportunities to live a healthy life, regardless of their circumstances.
  • Genuine Collaboration: We emphasize the importance of local partnerships and leverage the expertise of our diverse academic community to create synergy and foster meaningful change.
  • Bidirectional Learning: We promote a mutual exchange of knowledge and capacity building, recognizing that solutions are most effective when informed by the perspectives and experiences of the communities we serve.
  • Cultural Humility: We approach our work with cultural humility, respecting the customs, beliefs, and values of the communities we engage with.
  • Accountability and Transparency: We uphold the highest standards of accountability and transparency in all our global health initiatives, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and ethically.

'Savior Complex' serves as a stark reminder of the need for ethical and responsible global health practices. The Center for Global Health Equity remains committed to our mission of fostering connectivity, promoting health equity, and collaborating for meaningful change. We invite individuals and organizations to join us in redefining the landscape of global health to ensure that all individuals and communities can access the quality healthcare they deserve.
