Cheryl Moyer, PhD, MPH, Appointed Associate Director for Education and Mentorship

The Center for Global Health Equity at the University of Michigan is pleased to announce that Cheryl A. Moyer, PhD, MPH, has been appointed its new associate director for education and mentorship.
A deeply engaged educator, researcher, and mentor, Moyer brings decades of experience advancing global maternal and newborn health and a longstanding commitment to strengthening research capacity across borders. In her new role, she will help guide the center’s efforts to foster meaningful faculty engagement, expand mentorship opportunities, and support the development of the next generation of global health scholars and leaders.
Moyer holds joint appointments as Associate Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Learning Health Sciences, with additional faculty affiliations in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical School and the Department of Health Management and Policy at the School of Public Health. Her research focuses on the social and cultural factors that influence maternal and neonatal health outcomes in low-resource settings, with a particular passion for Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa.
Throughout her career, Moyer has mentored more than 120 trainees from Ghana, Uganda, and the United States, including students, residents, and junior faculty working across disciplines. She has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on projects supported by the Fogarty International Center, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and USAID. She has co-led five Fogarty-funded global health training grants.
Moyer earned her MPH from the University of North Carolina and her PhD from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She is widely published, with more than 200 articles and thousands of citations in the fields of maternal and child health, global health equity, and implementation science.
“Cheryl’s leadership and passion for mentorship and health for all make her an extraordinary addition to our leadership team,” said Akbar Waljee, MD, MSc, Leslie D. Yamada and Tachi Yamada M.D. Director of the Center for Global Health Equity. “She has a rare ability to nurture talent and drive collaborative research that has real-world impact.
