The Health AI Landscape in Lima, Peru: Ethical, Legal, and Technical Considerations for Trustworthy Implementation of AI Tools for Chronic Respiratory Conditions
This project maps the landscape for trustworthy artificial intelligence in health care in Lima, Peru, focusing on tools for chronic respiratory conditions such as tuberculosis. Peru's health system is fragmented across public, social security and private sectors, and AI tools are being developed and introduced without a shared framework for evaluating whether they are safe, equitable and appropriate for local settings. Partnering with the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, the team brings together expertise in learning health sciences, epidemiology, and law and AI policy to build an equity-centered framework for evaluating AI tools across their lifecycle, and to identify the facilitators and barriers that connect research, clinical and public health information systems. The work establishes a durable global partnership and lays the groundwork to guide responsible AI development for a pressing health challenge in Peru.
