Optimizing Antibiotic Use in Nepal's Poultry Value Chain: A Mixed-Methods Baseline Assessment and Co-Design of Interventions

This project addresses antimicrobial resistance at one of its most consequential sources in Nepal: antibiotic use in the poultry value chain. Led by the Institute for Social and Environmental Research-Nepal in collaboration with Bodh Insight, Agriculture and Forestry University, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Michigan, the team builds on years of Nepal-based antimicrobial resistance research, including several randomized trials conducted with policymakers at the Ministry of Health. Using a mixed-methods baseline assessment, the project maps how antibiotics move through and are used across the poultry sector, then works with local stakeholders to co-design interventions that reduce inappropriate use. The work connects food systems, nutrition and public health expertise and is designed to inform future studies and scale-up that protect both animal and human health.
