Towards EQUITable Oncology: Identifying Needs and Designing Sustainable Interventions for Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa (EQUIT-Study)

This project focuses on adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer in Kenya, a group whose distinct care delivery needs have not been well described in sub-Saharan Africa. Grounded in clinical observations from investigators at Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and developed through long-standing cancer care collaborations with the University of Michigan, the study assesses the specific needs of the AYA cancer population and the barriers to care delivery in the Kenyan setting. The team will combine surveys, group sessions and interviews, pairing Kenyan clinical and contextual expertise with Michigan’s strengths in implementation science and mixed-methods design. The study will co-design feasible, sustainable interventions that improve the cancer journey and outcomes for AYA people with cancer in sub-Saharan Africa.
